Ground Level Deck Ideas

Ground level decks are decks built close to the ground and are ideal for relatively flat backyards. They can be built either against your home or as a standalone structure. Despite being a simple structure compared to elevated decks, ground level decks can be customized and made your own through dynamic decking patterns or the addition of planter boxes.

Why choose a ground level deck design?

  • They are a seamless transition from the indoors to outdoors, connecting your home to your backyard.
  • Low level decks typically don't require railing (usually below 30" tall per the building code) which can save you time and cost of deck railing installation.
  • Ground level decks can give you the freedom to build almost anywhere in your backyard.

Speaking of building anywhere in your backyard, platform decks are not attached to a structure, such as your home and are free-standing. They can be the perfect platform for a hot tub or you may just want to create a space tucked in the corner of your yard that you find has the best shade. Platform decks do not have to be simple, adding a picture frame boarder around the deck can add visual interest. You can use the same color as the rest of the decking for a subtle design or a contrasting color for a bold look.

Looking to create a seamless transition from the indoors to the outdoors instead? Here are a few ways you can elevate a small ground level deck without taking up too much space or breaking the bank!

Showcase your style by adding furniture and decor that will set your deck apart. By choosing a color scheme for your outdoor furniture and decor that complements your interior design you can create a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors.

Don't want to add furniture? No problem. Adding a dynamic decking pattern can make a small deck look like a masterpiece simply by changing the angle of the boards. Diagonal decking boards draw the eye outward making a narrow deck look wider. It adds visual interest and is sure to spark a conversation!

You may decide you would like to visually divide the space of your ground level deck by using contrasting colors. It is a simple way to create different sections of the deck for different uses.

A multi-level deck is another way to create different sections within your deck. You can add dimension to your ground level deck simply by separating the levels by one or two steps. The subtle height differences between the different sections of your deck and a picture frame around each section defines each area for specific uses. From cooking to dining to relaxing around the fire pit, you can still have it all at the ground level with a multi-level deck. To add an extra level of elegance and safety add in-deck lighting to illuminate each step.

Ground level decks aren't limited to the front or back of your house. You may consider a low level wraparound deck that gives you plenty of space for functional use, without taking up all the square footage in your backyard. This can create a fluid outdoor living space, with built in features such as benches and planter boxes this design can be kept very interesting!

If the front porch and backyard are taken, you may consider a small ground level deck located in the side yard or off a primary suite. This creates a more private feel, and a cozy space to enjoy with loved ones.

Ground level decks do require railing if they are above 30" in most areas. However, even if your deck does not require railing, you may still consider it for safety or aesthetic reasons. To maintain an open feel you may consider glass panels in your railing. This is a modern option and creates a unique deck perimeter.

While they are called ground level decks these structures are still built in a way that elevates the deck and allows for good air circulation underneath. This prevents the substructure from decaying prematurely from ground contact. View the gallery below for more ground level deck ideas! Call us at 208-760-2727 for a free estimate!
