Tips for Winterizing your Composite Deck

Unfortunately, the brisk evenings are already upon us and winter is just around the corner. It is time to prepare your deck for the winter months ahead. Composite decking is more resilient to harsh winter weather and can withstand the ice and snow without rotting or warping, making it an excellent material for our area. A few simple steps and your deck will be ready for the winter season.

First, remove any dirt, grime, and debris from your deck. Sweep off leaves to avoid having to clean up any residue they may leave behind in the spring. To clean your deck gently scrub the deck with warm, soapy water and rinse or gently power-wash the deck (either yourself or hire a professional service). Cover all patio furniture you plan to leave out with waterproof covers to avoid cleaning stains later.

To remove snow and ice from your composite deck use a plastic shovel, moving parallel to the boards. This will minimize the risk of accidental dings and dents that can void your warranty. For light dustings, use a broom in lieu of a shovel. Calcium chloride or rock salt can be used to melt snow and ice from the deck surface. For specific advice from the manufacturer on how to clean and remove snow from your deck boards, visit this site.

That's it! Kick back and relax by crossing off these fall bucket list ideas.

With increased durability and less maintenance, composite decking can be the perfect solution for your outdoor needs. Spend less time on maintenance and more time relaxing outside and checking things off your fall bucket list. Take these small steps this fall so your deck is ready for you to enjoy in the spring!
