Rigby, Idaho, is a small town in Jefferson County. It was founded in 1884 by George Albert Cordon, Omer Samuel Call, Josiah Call, and Cyril Josiah Call, members of the LDS church, and named after William F. Rigby, a prominent early settler. Rigby currently has a population of around 5,600.
Rigby is known as the “birthplace of television” because Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of television, lived on a ranch on the outskirts of town and attended Rigby High School. He demonstrated the first working image dissector soon after he turned 21. This video camera tube was used in all television cameras until the late 20th century. In 1984, Farnsworth was inducted into the National Investors Hall of Fame.
Many locals spend their weekends during the summer at Jefferson County Lake (colloquially known as Rigby Lake). This lake is filled naturally by groundwater and provides opportunities for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, floating, and swimming. There is also a lake slide, grassy areas, walking trails, sandy beaches, volleyball nets, a playground, campsites, and local food vendors.
Close to Rigby Lake is Yellowstone Bear World. This drive-thru wildlife park gets you up close with Rocky Mountain elk, bison, white-tailed deer, mule deer, Rocky Mountain goats, American black bears, and grizzly bears. Once you’ve driven through the park, you can bottle feed bear cubs, visit the petting zoo, go on amusement rides, or visit Jurassic Creek, which features over 20 life-size interactive dinosaurs.
